If there’s ever been a good reason to go outdoors and take the kids or family with you, it’s Free Fishing Days. These days when no costly fishing license is required can be found from coast to coast. The dates vary, but a search of your state’s game and fish division website is a good place to discover all the details.
Note that some states offer this over one weekend as two free days, such as Louisiana, New York, Oklahoma and Oregon offer. Other states offer several separate dates during a year, like California, where the 2012 free fishing dates are July 7 and September 8. Some states offer one day only, such as Alabama, where the free fishing day will be held June 9. There are more good reasons to take the kids fishing and let them explore the outdoors. In Nevada, kids who create a fishing focused poster can win a free guided fishing trip for themselves and their families. Details are at: http://ndow.org/fish/free/2012_FFD_Flyer.pdf
Some states, such as Tennessee, hold special water-side events across the state on free fishing days with opportunities for kids to learn about fishing. Some of the selected sites and participating clubs can host up to 250 kids.
All anglers who plan to participate in these events should read all the many details since numerous states have very specific restrictions to legally participate. At least half of the 50 states offer some free fishing opportunities to residents.
