The Rhode Island Legislature voted to kill four anti-hunting measures:
House Bill 6616 would have required government background checks for purchasing ammunition or reloading components.
Senate Bill 2637 would have raised the age to purchase rifles, shotguns and ammo from 18 years old to 21, effectively alienating young hunters from participating with their own firearms.
Senate Bill 2646 would have prohibited the sale of furs and fur products, thereby eliminating trappers from selling the hides of any furbearers.
Senate Bill 2651 would have prohibited hunting where “man-made structures and/or natural barriers” limit an animal’s free movement, potentially making hunting impossible.
“Had these bills become law, Rhode Island would have quickly become one of the most hostile states towards hunters in the U.S.,” said Dillon Barto, manager of state services at the Sportsmen’s Alliance. “We commend the actions of our fellow sportsmen who took the time out of their busy days to contact their elected official to help defeat these egregious bills.”
