Last week, March 12, the gavel fell, technically ending the 2026 Florida legislative session, but they did not perform the final, ceremonial Sine Die adjournment because their work is legally unfinished due to the unresolved budget.
Status of Sportsmen-Related Bills
This year, the legislative session was quiet for sportsmen. There were several sportsmen-related bills introduced, and nothing good or bad made it to the Governor’s desk for final consideration. This included the two bills supported by the Sportsmen’s Alliance.
- HB 133 would have lowered the minimum age for purchasing rifles and shotguns from 21 to 18.
- HB 1551 would have protected manufacturers from being held liable in a product liability lawsuit for the absence or presence of specific design features, safety mechanisms, or performance standards that are not required by federal law.
The Ongoing Threat to Outdoor Traditions
While the session is over, our work is not. Animal extremists and anti-hunting and gun groups never clock out. They are already pivoting to the interim period, looking for ways to bypass the legislature through ballot initiatives or administrative rule changes that threaten our traditions and lifestyle.
