Center for Biological Diversity Submits Petition to End all Fur Sales
The Center for Biological Diversity (CBD), one of the country’s most fanatical animal extremist groups, recently submitted a petition to Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPW) demanding the agency ban the sale, barter, or trade of furs in the state. Citing concerns about decimated furbearer populations and a changing climate, the petition is no more than a nonsensical encore to animal extremists’ attempt to ban hunting of mountain lions and bobcats in Colorado last year.
CBD’s petition bans “the for-profit sale of furbearer parts, including hides, pelts, skins, claws, and similar items, with limited exemptions.” Interestingly, CBD points out that the proposed amendment “does not impose any restrictions on the hunting or trapping of furbearers.” This is a red herring. Animal extremist groups successfully banned the use of leghold traps, snares, and instant-kill body-gripping traps in Colorado in the mid-1990s. For now, Coloradans can still trap with the use of live traps, or box traps.
But since the 1990s trap ban went into place, animal extremists have relentlessly attempted to ban trapping and multiple methods of hunting, outright. This petition is another such attempt to erase trapping altogether in the state.
The petition – packed with nothing more than word salad pseudo-science – points to the North American Model of Wildlife Conservation (Model) as a reason to ban the sale of furs. The Model outlines seven tenants to managing wildlife, and the abundant wildlife populations we enjoy today are a direct result of agency adherence to the Model’s principles. But animal extremist groups have routinely dismissed the Model for its focus on game species and hunting, calling the model outdated. Yet now they rely on it as a means to get their way.
“Do not doubt for a second that animal extremists in Colorado and elsewhere will continue to come for your rights. No matter how much they win or lose, they will continue to push for more,” said Todd Adkins, senior vice president for the Sportsmen’s Alliance. “This petition is no more than a clumsy attempt to help them reach the end goal of wiping sportsmen from the landscape.”
