If you and your family are searching for an excitement filled event this summer, take a look at fishing clinics. Many of these introductory classes cover the basics of fishing, plus everything from tying a proper knot to casting techniques. In many cases the classes are free—or require a nominal fee.
For example, the free fishing clinics offered by South Carolina’s Department of Natural Resources Aquatic Education Section introduce the basics of fishing to the young and old, or those who simply need a refresher. The clinics teach how to tie fishing knots, how to rig a rod and reel and casting. Then participants get to try their hand at fishing. Every participant will also learn how and where to fish.
In Colorado, another state where fishing clinics are available, the participants go beyond the basics of baiting and casting to learn about: ecosystems, riparian habitat, fish handling, angler ethics, outdoor safety and how to safely fish.
Some fishing clinics, however, do establish age limits and have other restrictions. In nearly all cases an adult or guardian must be present with any child participating in a fishing clinic.
Check with your state’s game and fish department or local parks department to possibly discover a fishing clinic near you.
