Senate Bill 23-256, a bill to prohibit reintroduction of gray wolves until the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS) has designated Colorado gray wolves as an experimental population, will be heard TODAY in the House Agriculture, Water & Natural Resources Committee upon adjournment of the House floor session in HCR 0107. It is important that sportsmen reach out to committee members asking them to support this bill as critical to the future management of wolves in the state.
Designation as an experimental population allows the state greater management flexibility, which will be extremely important as newly established wolf packs interact with the landscape. Human-wolf conflicts will increase, livestock predation will rise and ungulate species like elk and deer will be impacted. If wolves are reintroduced before FWS designates the population as experimental, the options for state wildlife managers will be extremely limited.
SB23-256 passed by a wide margin in the Senate, but animal extremists are pushing hard in the House to get this bill killed or hobbled with gutting amendments. Sportsmen need to stand up and be heard on this one and let committee members know this bill must be supported!
