Earlier this week, the House Civil Justice & Claims Subcommittee reported out Florida HB 1551, a bill that enhances protections for firearm manufacturers against nuisance lawsuits arising from the misuse of their products in crimes. The House Judiciary Committee will now hear the bill.

How HB 1551 Protects the Industry
As previously reported HB 1551:
- serves as a necessary state-level companion to the federal Protection of Lawful Commerce in Arms Act (PLCAA), closing loopholes that activists use to bypass federal protections in state courts,
- protects lawful manufacturers from “nuisance” lawsuits that attempt to hold them liable for the absence of features not required by federal law, such as unproven “smart gun” technology or magazine disconnects, and
- shields manufacturers from liability for not including non-standard features.
