A major win for sportsmen yesterday, when House Bill 25-1258 was postponed indefinitely. This means the bill is dead for the year.
As previously reported, HB25-1258 would have had detrimental effects for hunting, trapping and fishing by just changing one critical word in Colorado’s wildlife statute, which reads “The state shall utilize hunting, trapping, and fishing as the primary methods of effecting necessary wildlife harvest.”
By replacing “shall” with “may,” HB25-1258 would have removed hunting, trapping and fishing as the primary wildlife management tool.

Sportsmen can also breathe a little easier after HB25-1180, a prohibition on pet-animal sales in public, was amended earlier this week and removed “deliver, lease, or otherwise transfer” from the bill. It also added language ensuring sanctioned exhibitions and competitions were exempted.
Prior to being amended, the bill was so broadly written that asking someone to hold your dog at the dog park or returning a dog that got loose could have resulted in a Class 2 misdemeanor with a maximum sentence of 18 months in jail, or a $5,000 fine, or both. Nor could you meet a breeder at a rest stop, parking lot or at a field trial to pick up your new puppy.
Thanks to your emails and active involvement, these bills are no longer of concern. However, with the 2025 legislative session far from over, the Sportsmen’s Alliance Government Affairs team will continue to closely monitor all sportsmen-related bills.

The defeat of HB25-1258 and amending of HB25-1180 could not have happened without sportsmen involvement.
