Virginia’s 46-day legislative session is half over. The gun-control majority in both chambers passed gun-control bills that have serious effects on sportsmen. Below is a status update on those bills.
We are expecting these bills to make it to Gov. Youngkin’s desk for consideration again. Keep an eye on your inbox for an action alert when it is time to ask the governor to continue his support for Virginia sportsmen and veto these bills again.
Bills in the House of Delegates:
SB848 prohibits a person under the age of 21 from purchasing certain semi-automatic rifles, pistols and shotguns.
SB891 imposes an arbitrary five-day delay before a law-abiding citizen may take possession of a legally purchased firearm.
SB1134 requires a firearm(s) and ammunition to be stored in a locked container, compartment or cabinet.
SB1181 bans law-abiding adults and persons under the age of 21 from owning certain semi-automatic rifles, shotguns and pistols, and places limits on magazine capacity.
SB1450 institutes new vague laws and restrictions on the already heavily regulated firearms industry. It also authorizes the Attorney General or a district attorney to sue a member of the firearm industry by alleging violations and even potential violations of these laws to the extreme of allowing persons “likely to be harmed” to request equitable relief from a court.
Bills in the Senate:
HB1607 bans certain semi-automatic firearms manufactured after July 1, 2025, including many semi-automatic rifles, pistols and shotguns. Additionally, HB 1607 arbitrarily limits magazine capacities and discriminates against adults who are 18-20 years old.
HB1608 institutes new vague laws and restrictions on the already heavily regulated firearms industry. It also authorizes the Attorney General or a district attorney to sue a member of the firearm industry by alleging violations and even potential violations of these laws to the extreme of allowing persons “likely to be harmed” to request equitable relief from a court.
