Senate Bill 1499 is scheduled to be heard by the Senate Special Committee on Criminal Law and Public Safety and the committee needs to know that sportsmen are opposed to this injustice.
Animal extremists want you to think that Senate Bill 1499 is a feel-good animal protection bill by adding more offenses to the Humane Care for Animals Act. But while current law allows for the seizure of an animal upon a conviction of animal cruelty, SB 1499 would allow seizures for minor violations, such as failure to maintain proper records. Seizures should be reserved for offenses of animal cruelty that actually harm an animal, and not for minor infractions that can be corrected through education and fines.
SB 1499 does not stop there as it may also prohibit anyone residing in the house at the time of the violation from owning and possessing an animal in the future.
The Sportsmen’s Alliance does not condone the mistreatment of animals, but we insist that a proper investigation into each matter is required. The removal of an animal from a home due to a minor violation will be more detrimental to the animal, which defeats the purpose of humane care for animals.
Innocent until proven guilty is the cornerstone of the American justice system and SB 1499 is an affront to this basic protection.
Tomorrow’s committee meeting starts at 4:40 p.m. at 400 Capitol in Springfield. Please use our take action button to email the members of the committee urging them to OPPOSE SB 1499.
