Senator Julie Raque Adams, the Republican Majority Caucus Chair, has pre-filed legislation that would ban the most commonly used trap to harvest animals. Bill Request 492 (BR 492) has not been assigned to a committee.
Take Action Today! Kentucky sportsmen should contact Senator Julie Raque Adams and ask her to pull BR 492. Members can call Senator Adams at: 502-564-2450.
Trapping is an integral part of the North American Model of Conservation and is managed through scientifically based regulations that are strictly enforced by game wardens in the Bluegrass State. Since trapping is highly regulated, it provides many benefits to not only wildlife, but to people as well. In addition to helping prevent the possible spread of diseases such as rabies, trapping can also play a crucial role in reducing local populations of predators that may be impacting other species. Trapping also helps to mitigate unwanted interactions with humans and pets, and can help stop expensive damage caused by animals when flooding from beaver dams or crop loss is occurring. Biologists routinely work with trappers to monitor furbearer populations, disease and the overall health of the ecosystem.
“Academic institutions, government agencies and other nongovernmental institutions all use trapping for research and management purposes,” said Bruce Tague vice president of government affairs for Sportsmen’s Alliance. “The Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife is in a much better position than a politician from downtown Louisville to determine appropriate hunting and trapping means and methods, and should be deferred to on matters such as this that involve specific wildlife management expertise.”
