On Saturday, April 1, the 2023 Mississippi legislature adjourned sine die. This means the legislative session is completed. There were multiple bills introduced of interest and concern to sportsmen and women this year and the below bills made it to Governor Tate Reeves’ desk.
HB 49 allows a native son or daughter to be issued a resident lifetime sportsman hunting and fishing license if official documents reflect that one of the applicant’s parents was born in the State of Mississippi and was on active military service at the time of the applicant’s birth. HB 49 was signed into law on March 13 and will take effect on July 1, 2023.
HB 979 allows a person to search for and/or recover the mortally wounded animal with the aid of a light or lighting device if the animal was wounded during legal hunting hours. HB 979 was signed into law on March 13 and will take effect on July 1, 2023.
HB 1110, the Second Amendment Financial Privacy Act, prohibits the misuse of payment card processing systems to surveil, report, or otherwise discourage constitutionally protected firearm and ammunition purchases within the State of Mississippi. HB 1110 was sent to Governor Reeves for his consideration today.
Even though the 2023 legislative session is over, the Sportsmen’s Alliance will continue to monitor activities in the Magnolia State as you never know when issues that sportsmen need to be aware of may arise.
