Earlier this month, the 2026 Mississippi legislature adjourned sine die. In legislative terms, “sine die” (Latin for “without day”) means the assembly has finished its business and adjourned for the year without setting a specific date to return. For us, it means the legislative clock has stopped, and the fate of this year’s bills is sealed.
Here are some of the measures we tracked that were approved by the Legislature and Governor Tate Reeves.
- HB 1941: Authorizes state general obligation bonds to provide consistent, long-term funding for the Mississippi Outdoor Stewardship Trust Fund and ensures the board has the necessary resources to manage conservation projects across the state.
- HR 136: Formally recognizes and celebrates regulated trapping as an effective and essential wildlife management tool for disease control and habitat protection.
- SB 2420: Effective immediately, this law automatically extends hunting seasons for deer, turkey, and small game by one day if the season is scheduled to end on a Saturday. In those cases, you can now hunt until 30 minutes after sunset on that Sunday.
- SB 2657: Establishes the Wild Turkey Stamp Fund, ensuring that fees from turkey stamps go directly toward habitat restoration, population research, and increased hunter access.
Ongoing Threats to Mississippi Traditions
While the session is over, our work is not. Animal extremists and anti-hunting and gun groups never clock out. They are already pivoting to the interim period, looking for ways to bypass the legislature through ballot initiatives or administrative rule changes that threaten our traditions and lifestyle.
We’ve seen it in neighboring states: the moment we look away, they strike. We need you to stay engaged, keep your boots on the ground, and be ready to mobilize at a moment’s notice.
Defending Mississippi’s Hunting Heritage
Review a complete list of monitored bills via the Interactive Legislative Map. Please share this message with fellow sportsmen to help defend our hunting, fishing, and trapping heritage in the Magnolia State.
Pass this along to your family, friends, and every fellow hunter or firearm owner you know. We can’t afford to be the “silent majority.” While our opponents are well-funded and banking on our indifference, we cannot afford to stay on the sidelines. When we mobilize, we send an unmistakable message: Mississippi’s sportsmen and women are the primary stewards of our wildlife and natural resources, and we are ready to fight for our outdoor heritage.
The Sportsmen’s Alliance guarantees hunting, fishing and trapping for the American sportsman now and forever. We’re there when sportsmen need us most.
