Last week, a bill to ban mountain lion hunting in Nebraska passed the Natural Resources committee by a vote of 6-2. The measure, sponsored by Senator Ernie Chambers (D-Omaha), is now pending before the full legislature and could receive its first vote at any time.
“Nebraska sportsmen must call their Senator’s today in opposition to LB 671,” said Evan Heusinkveld, U.S. Sportsmen’s Alliance’s (USSA) vice president of government affairs. “Wildlife management should be handled by the professionals of the Game and Parks Commission, not by anti-hunting politics.”
Earlier this year, Senator Chambers announced his intentions to oppose every proposal of the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission until the mountain lion season is abolished.
In 1995, Nebraska added mountain lions to the state’s game list in order to manage the steadily growing population. Over the past 20 years, the population levels have risen enough to sustain a limited harvest using a controlled quota system. In 2013, the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission established its first ever mountain lion season which commenced this month.
