Earlier today, the House Criminal Justice & Public Safety Committee voted on two bills detrimental to sportsmen and gun owners in the Granite State.
As law-abiding sportsmen and gun owners, we know these bills have nothing to do with public safety or reducing the criminal misuse of firearms. Unfortunately, anti-gun extremists seem to think that making the ownership of firearms more restrictive for law-abiding citizens will stop violent crime. It simply doesn’t work that way.
House Bill 59 requires a background check prior to any commercial firearm sale, which is already federal law. The committee recommendation on HB 59 was inexpedient to legislate, which means it was voted “ought not to pass.” We can hope that when it reaches the floor, house members follow the committee’s recommendation, but there are no guarantees.
House Bill 76 imposes a mandatory three-day waiting period for firearms purchases even after the purchaser passes a background check, with limited exceptions. The committee failed to make a recommendation on HB 76, so it will go to the House floor with no recommendation from the committee.
Neither bill has been scheduled for a hearing on the House floor yet, but we will monitor these bills and will notify you when action is needed. In the meantime, check out our legislative map for all the bills we are monitoring in New Hampshire and around the nation.
