New Hampshire’s pro-sportsmen legislators are working to join the list of seven states that already ensure the merchant category codes (MCC) to track firearm and ammunition purchases with credit cards never come to the Granite State.
Yesterday, the House passed House Bill 1186 by a vote of 203 to 174. This important legislation will now move to the Senate for further consideration.

House Bill 1186 prohibits a person or entity involved in facilitating or processing an electronic payment transaction and licensed to do business in this state, including a payment card issuer or payment card network, from assigning it to a merchant or requiring a merchant to use a firearms code. The bill also states for the purposes of the sale of firearms, ammunition for use in firearms, and firearms accessories, a firearms retailer may not provide a firearms code to a payment card issuer or payment card network and may only use or be assigned a merchant category code for general merchandise retailers or sporting goods retailers.
Unfortunately, California, the state that never says no to an opportunity to attack law-abiding sportsmen and gun owners, passed legislation into law allowing credit purchases of firearms and ammunition to be tracked. Big credit card companies are moving forward to comply with California’s new law. This means every anti-sportsman and anti-gun legislator will be looking for their chance to introduce legislation to track sportsmen and gun owners’ credit card purchases.
It is now more important than ever for sportsmen and gun owners to protect their credit card purchase privacy.
