On Friday, Feb. 17, at 1:30 p.m. in room 309, the House Judiciary Committee is scheduled to vote on HB 100 and HB 101. These bills, if signed into law, will have serious effects on sportsmen and gun owners. Please use our Take Action button to email the members of the committee and urge them to oppose HB 100 and HB 101.
As law-abiding sportsmen and gun owners, we know these bills only affect us and have nothing to do with public safety and reducing the criminal misuse of firearms. Unfortunately, anti-gun extremists seem to think that making the ownership of firearms more restrictive with the bills listed below will stop criminals from acquiring a firearm and using it with criminal intent.
House Bill 100 adds a mandatory 14-day waiting period on all firearm purchases. Waiting periods have not been shown to promote public safety. Instead, these arbitrary waiting periods limit the actions of law-abiding citizens, including those who want a firearm for self-defense or for hunting.
A committee substitute for House Bill 101 bans the manufacture, sale, purchase and possession of several semi-automatic firearms and magazines with a capacity of greater than ten rounds of ammunition that sportsmen commonly own for hunting, self-defense, competition, and recreation, as well as certain attachments for them; bans handguns with fixed magazines that can hold more than 15 rounds of ammunition and long guns with fixed magazines that can hold more than 10 rounds of ammunition; bans parts or combinations of parts from which such firearms can be assembled; and bans .50 BMG caliber firearms. Current owners of any of these firearms or items will have to register them with the New Mexico Department of Public Safety prior to March 1, 2024, to maintain possession, or transfer them out of state or to a federal firearm licensed dealer, or face FELONY charges.
Don’t forget to let your family, friends, and fellow sportsmen know, and urge them to take action and to join in the fight with the Sportsmen’s Alliance.
