Besides voting for the candidates to represent you in Washington, D.C., and Salem, this year you will vote to decide your hunting, shooting and firearm-ownership fate for the foreseeable future.

Despite what you may have read or heard, Ballot Measure 114 is NOT a background check measure. Background checks are already required under federal and Oregon law. The proponents of Measure 114 aren’t telling voters this in an attempt to sow confusion and pass this extreme initiative.
Instead, Measure 114 mandates that a non-existent permit-for-purchase system be put in place for every firearm sale, but nobody knows what this is, there is no money to implement it and many law enforcement agencies have already said they cannot meet the requirements of the initiative as written. In other words, Measure 114 will bring firearm sales of all handguns, rifles and shotguns to a grinding halt.
The measure also requires an applicant to complete a live-fire firearm safety training exercise with a law enforcement-certified instructor. This is another layer of prohibition as most of the current firearm safety courses offered in the state do not meet the standard and many sheriffs have publicly stated they will not offer such training. The fee for the permit to purchase is yet unknown, and the cost of implementation is estimated to exceed $50 million in unfunded mandates to local governments.
Measure 114 requires a ban on magazines or firearms holding more than 10 rounds, which will include many hunting rifles and shotguns, and the publication of an annual registry of applicants with personal identifying information available to the public.
