On Wednesday, March 25, the Senate overwhelmingly passed SB 214, which removes firearm suppressors from the state’s “dangerous ordnance” list. The bill will now move to the House for consideration. Keep an eye on your inbox, as we will update you as soon as a committee hearing is scheduled.
As previously reported, this bill is a step toward modernizing safety standards and ensuring the longevity of outdoor traditions in the Buckeye State.
Aligning Ohio Law with Federal Standards
SB 214 aligns Ohio’s state statutes with existing federal law and simplifies the legal landscape for those who have already met federal ownership requirements. Furthermore, it recognizes suppressors are not a “dangerous ordnance,” but a useful tool for hunters and gun owners, because it:
- Reduces the decibel level of firearm discharge helping prevent long-term hearing damage among individuals in the field.
- Reduces noise pollution, helping maintain positive relationships between the hunting community and nearby residents, potentially preserving access to land.
- Reduces muzzle blast and felt recoil.
