The South Carolina Department of Natural Resources will host a public meeting on Thursday, June 17, at 6 p.m. at 138 Hagwood Mill Road in Pickens, S.C., as part of the process to eventually open Sunday hunting on wildlife management areas (WMA) in the state. The meeting will be conducted in person only and local members can attend to gather information, ask questions and provide comments in support of Sunday hunting.
Currently, Sunday hunting is only allowed on private lands in South Carolina. WMAs are closed on Sunday for hunting but other kinds of outdoor recreation, such as fishing and hiking are allowed. Approximately 1.2 million acres of public land are enrolled in WMAs and this expansion will offer substantial hunting opportunities for sportsmen.
Sunday hunting has long been a priority at the Sportsmen’s Alliance. In 2020 and 2019, the Alliance helped secure major Sunday hunting victories in North Carolina, where WMAs were opened to Sunday hunting for the 2021 season, and in Pennsylvania where three days of Sunday hunting were opened for the first time in centuries in 2020.
“The Alliance will continue to advocate for public land Sunday hunting opportunities in South Carolina,” said Jacob Hupp, associate director of state services for Sportsmen’s Alliance. “We encourage all local South Carolina sportsmen to attend this meeting in person and support Sunday hunting.”
