At noon yesterday, the New Mexico 2026 legislative session adjourned sine die, and with it, Governor Lujan Grisham’s draconian “public safety” bill, SB 17, officially died.
The Impact of Grassroots Opposition
Your calls and emails made the difference. By flooding the Roundhouse with opposition, you ensured the so-called “Stop Illegal Gun Trade Act” stalled in the House Judiciary Committee, never reaching the floor before the clock ran out.
What SB 17 Would Have Done
Make no mistake: if passed, SB 17 would have redefined commonly used gas-operated semi-automatic firearms, .50 caliber rifles, and standard magazines as “extremely dangerous weapons“. By July 1, it would have effectively banned the sale and transfer of the very tools New Mexico sportsmen and gun owners rely on for hunting, sport shooting, and self-defense.
The Fight is Far From Over
At the end-of-session press conference, the Governor stated, I think there’s a lot more public safety that we have to do,” and the lead sponsor, Senator Debbie O’Malley, already told the Albuquerque Journal, that she is not giving up.
Hunters and Gun Owners: Stay Vigilant
The 2027 session will be a 60-day marathon, not a 30-day sprint. This “Long Session” is when the most aggressive anti-gun legislation returns to the Roundhouse with twice as much time to move through committees. We need every sportsman ready to speak up, reach out, and hold the line against this overreaching agenda.
New Mexico sportsmen and women have reached a defining crossroads. This is not just a policy debate; it is a war of attrition against our heritage. If we surrender to silence, radical extremists will dismantle our traditions piece by piece, regulating our way of life into extinction.
Urge your family and friends to stand with you and the Sportsmen’s Alliance today. Together, we will hold the line against this rising tide of activism and protect our New Mexico legacy.
The Sportsmen’s Alliance guarantees hunting, fishing, and trapping for the American sportsman now and forever. We’re there when sportsmen need us most. We are the only organization specifically created to protect the individual hunter, angler, and trapper – no matter the threat. We will never compromise when it comes to defending our way of life in the courts, in the legislatures, in the public square, and at the ballot box.
