Tomorrow’s hearing, April 18, in the House Select Committee on Community Safety in Room E2.012 of the Capitol Extension in Austin, will be at 9 a.m., instead of 2 p.m., and the list of bills to be heard has changed also.
Among the list of bills to be heard these three are of serious concern to sportsmen:
House Bill 236 requires all firearms sales, even by private individuals, must be conducted through federally licensed retailers (FFLs). Gun control advocates are still under the illusion that criminals go through background checks. We all obviously know criminals do not go through the legal channels to get their guns.
House Bill 298 imposes an arbitrary three-business day waiting period on all firearms transfers by FFL dealers. Researchers have shown time and again that waiting periods do nothing to reduce violent crime and stand in the way of lawful self-defense and the purchase of firearms for recreational hunting and shooting. This is yet another “wish list” item for anti-gun politicians who simply want to restrict our freedom.
House Bill 2744 prohibits those under the age of 21 from purchasing most semi-automatic rifles. Law-abiding citizens under the age of 21 should not be discriminated against simply based on age. Recently, a federal judge struck down a Minnesota law that restricted the firearm rights of those younger than 21, finding that the protections afforded to all citizens under the Second Amendment are equally enjoyed by those aged 18-20. This is gun control on hysterics, with no connection to the real world or reduction of violent crime as a plausible rationale for such a draconian move.
