Summary: The U.S. House of Representatives is set to vote on the 2026 Farm Bill this week after successful efforts by the Sportsmen’s Alliance to remove anti-hunting language that threatened dog training and field trials.
Yesterday, Monday, April 27, the U.S. House Rules Committee met to set the stage for a full floor vote later this week, possibly Thursday, April 30, on H.R. 7567, the Farm, Food, and National Security Act of 2026 (the 2026 Farm Bill).
Understanding the House Rules Committee Process
This is a critical procedural step before a bill can be debated by the full House of Representatives. The Rules Committee does not vote on the final passage of the bill itself; instead, it “writes the rule” for its consideration, including debate time, managing amendments, and establishing procedures.
How the Sportsmen’s Alliance Blocked Anti-Hunting Amendments
As we have reported, in March, animal extremists snuck anti-hunting language into the Farm Bill through an amendment, “The Greyhound Protection Act,” at the end of a marathon session in the House Agriculture Committee. That language would have banned the use of hunting dogs in various pursuits, dog training and field trials that use live animals. The Sportsmen’s Alliance worked tirelessly with Chairman GT Thompson to remove the egregious language from the bill.
Sportsmen’s Voices Heard in D.C.
Thirty minutes into the hearing, Rules Committee Chairwoman Foxx noted that her office was flooded with calls from concerned sportsmen. In response, Chairman Thompson confirmed on the record that his office had been similarly deluged with calls from sportsmen and that, as a result, the anti-hunting language had been successfully stripped from the version currently under consideration.
Protecting Our Hunting Heritage from Future Threats
While the Farm Bill is vital to conservation and rural development, we cannot allow it to become a vehicle for anti-hunting provisions that threaten our time-honored hunting heritage.
The Mission: Securing Scientific Wildlife Management
We must secure a Farm Bill that bolsters our farmers and restores vital habitat; it cannot become a Trojan Horse for anti-hunting amendments that undermine scientific wildlife management and infringe upon the foundational values of our outdoor way of life.
