Yesterday, February 16, the Senate Committee on Law & Justice passed SB 5232, referring the bill to the Senate Ways & Means Committee. SB 5232 has not been placed on the committee agenda yet, but rest assured the Sportsmen’s Alliance will inform you when action is needed.
As previously reported, SB 5232 requires an individual who wants to purchase a firearm first to complete an officially sanctioned firearms training course, which must also be done every five years to maintain a permit. It also requires a 10-day waiting period prior to a new gun owner taking possession of their firearm and could make this waiting period longer, or indefinitely, if the state fails to complete background checks during the original 10-day wait.
On a positive note, HB 1824 unanimously passed the Regulated Substances & Gaming Committee. HB 1824 expands the availability of sweepstakes, raffles, and other games of chance for nonprofit organizations to raise funds for important conservation, education, and other important work.
Wednesday, March 8 is the cutoff date for bills to pass out of their house of origin or they will be considered defeated for the year.
