Two gun-control bills have hearings scheduled in senate committees next week. Neither of these bills go after criminals or violent crime, they simply reduce freedom for law-abiding citizens. Sportsmen must respond and have their voices heard.
SB 5078 creates a special cause of action for individual victims to sue firearms manufacturers for the violent acts of third parties. This is bad policy motivated by those who simply want to destroy the sporting community because they know that if the industry cannot engage in lawful commerce, hunters and sport shooters cannot hunt and shoot.
Senate Bill 5078 is scheduled to be heard in the Senate Ways & Means Committee at 4 p.m. in Senate hearing room 4 and virtually next Tues., Jan. 31.

On Thursday, Feb. 2, the Senate Law and Justice Committee is scheduled to hear Senate Bill 5232 at 8 a.m. in person and virtually in Senate hearing room 4.
Senate Bill 5232 requires an individual who wants to purchase a firearm first to complete an officially sanctioned firearms training course, which must also be done every five years to maintain a permit. It also requires a 10-day waiting period prior to a new gun owner taking possession of their firearm and could make this waiting period longer, or indefinitely, if the state fails to complete background checks during the original 10-day wait.
Criminals do not go through a firearms training course, and they are certainly not going through a background check and waiting 10 days to get their illegally acquired firearms. So, the question is, what is the real motivation behind this type of legislation: Restrict freedom without benefiting public safety.
