As state agencies construct and improve more shooting ranges, many different types of shooting activities can be offered. Public ranges generally consist of the typical 25-yard rimfire and 100-yard centerfire ranges, along with some form of shotgun sports. But just as preferences for restaurants, movies, and music varies, different people are attracted to different types of shooting opportunities. This study examines the offerings ranges can or could provide, with the intention of helping ranges attract the new shooters and keep people returning.
Two reports are available: one is a visual summary report with the highlights and the other is a technical report for range designers and those wanting the details.

By Servicing Shooters Needs, Ranges Can Recruit and Retain More Business
Location, Activities, Instruction and Other Services Can Bring More People into the Shooting Sports and Help Keep Them Active
As states and industry invest more in shooting ranges, questions are being asked if ranges are offering opportunities, services, and experiences that will attract greater numbers of new shooters and keep them returning. Failure to do so will hinder future participation, plus diminish both returns on range investments and the conservation dollars generated by increased firearm and ammunition usage.
This research is meant to support states and other range builders in their efforts to provide range facilities that best serve the public, including current and potential new shooters. The results will help guide range design by explaining the types of shooting opportunities that will best attract avid and occasional shooters, as well as encourage people interested in shooting to try it.
