Humane World for Animals Hires Lobbyist to Stop Pending Coyote Hunting Contest Regulations
The Nevada Board of Wildlife Commissioners (Wildlife Commission) recently finalized regulatory language to address season dates and license requirements for coyote hunting contests in the state. Specifically, the regulation defines what a coyote hunting contest is, requires a Nevada hunting or Nevada trapping license to participate, and establishes a September 1 to March 31 season for the contest. Before becoming a final regulation, the language, which the Wildlife Commission passed by a 6-3 vote, must get final approval by the Nevada Legislative Commission – a group of lawmakers that approve agency regulations.
Unsurprisingly, anti-hunting animal extremists, who have been attempting to ban coyote hunting contests in the state for years, are losing their minds. Humane World for Animals (formerly the Humane Society of the United States) has engaged former Republican State Senator-turned-lobbyist Warren Hardy to convince the Legislative Commission to turn down the regulatory language. Already, Hardy is claiming the Wildlife Commission’s decision – which, make no mistake, is clearly within its mandate to manage the state’s wildlife – was some sort of vengeance for Humane World’s continued attempts to ban the activity.
“New issue, same old playbook. Humane World and other animal extremist groups are notorious for throwing tantrums when they don’t get their way,” said Dr. Todd Adkins, Senior Vice President at the Sportsmen’s Alliance. “Now, they’ve tossed aside the rulebook, and they’re attempting to circumvent the Wildlife Commission by complaining to the legislature. It’s a tired move, and no ideologue lobbyist can change that.”
The Nevada Legislature created the Wildlife Commission to “[e]stablish policies for areas of interest including…[t]he management of big and small game mammals, upland and migratory game birds, fur-bearing mammals, game fish, and protected and unprotected mammals, birds, fish, reptiles and amphibians” and “[t]he management and control of predatory wildlife.” Certainly, the Wildlife Commission has both the authority and expertise to manage coyote hunting in the state. No amount of hand-waving and yelling can change that.
