Yesterday, the House Commerce subcommittee recommended passage of House File 2464, a bill that will protect the firearms and ammunition purchase privacy of Iowa sportsmen when using a credit card. HF 2464 could be brought before the House Commerce Committee for a vote next week.
Please use our Take Action button to email the committee members urging them to protect Iowa’s sportsmen and vote YES on HF 2464.
HF 2464 prohibits the assignment of a firearms code in a manner that distinguishes a firearm retailer from other retailers. The bill also prohibits a government entity from knowingly keeping or causing to be kept a record or registry of privately owned firearms or of the owners of privately owned firearms.
As previously reported, in 2022, the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) approved the creation of a new merchant category code (MCC) for firearm retailers to use when their customers use a credit card to purchase firearms and ammunition. At the time, big credit card companies like American Express, Mastercard, and Visa paused the implementation of MCCs.
Since then, California passed legislation allowing credit purchases of firearms and ammunition to be tracked. Big credit card companies are moving forward to comply with California’s new law. It is now more important than ever for Iowa to protect its sportsmen’s credit card purchase privacy.
