It seems as though People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) have found a new enemy in the form of the computer hacking group ‘Anonymous.’
Recently, PETA filed a lawsuit seeking to reveal the personal information of individuals who criticized the organization online.
In response, Anonymous issued a ‘Call to Arms”, criticizing PETA for attacking freedom of speech after three individuals posted comments on a story run by the Huffington Post. That story drew fire from PETA because of the shocking details it exposed about the organizations kill-rate at its Virginia facility.
‘It is time PETA was reminded that Anonymous does not forgive or forget those who oppose free speech and will not stand for legal threats against those voicing legitimate criticisms.” said the post by ‘Anonymous.’
According to Anonymous, PETA failed in their effort to press charges against the Huffington Post reporter, and has instead filed a lawsuit demanding the personal information of the three individuals who made comments online about the story. Despite nearly 5,000 comments about the article; PETA, however, is supposedly targeting these individuals because of their comments referring them to “animal Kevorkians.”
“This kind of legal maneuver is typical of corporations and organizations who cannot accept opposing viewpoints and think freedom of speech and online anonymity are merely inconveniences to be dealt with by high powered and expensive lawyers and huge piles of cash.” stated Anonymous.
PETA sits in the number three spot on the USSA’s ‘Dirty Dozen’ list. The animal rights group has urged followers to interfere with hunts by protesting, spreading human hair, and other unlawful acts.
