California’s 2023 bill filing deadline has passed and the Sportsmen’s Alliance has been reviewing bills. California is notorious for “bait and switch” on bills. This means the Sportsmen’s Alliance will be closely monitoring activity throughout the long legislative session.
Bills of interest that are currently being monitored:
Pro-Sportsmen bills:
SB 772 raises the junior age to purchase a junior hunting license from 16 to 18.
AB 293 requires, upon application to the California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDWF), lifetime hunting licenses and lifetime sport fishing licenses to be issued at no cost to Gold Star Family members who meet certain eligibility requirements.
AB 1507 exempts a youth hunting or sport shooting organization or nonprofit conservation organization fundraising event from being held on state-owned, leased, occupied, or operated. property.
Anti-Sportsmen bills:
SB 8 requires the Insurance Commissioner to set the minimum coverage for a policy required by firearm owners and to develop a standardized form of evidence of liability coverage.
SB 637 prohibits financial institutions that do business with gun manufacturers from doing business with the state of California.
AB 28 enacts a gun and ammo tax to fund anti-violence measures, making law-abiding citizens responsible for the criminal acts of others.
AB 554 makes it easier to seize animals, like sporting dogs, without due process protections in place, leading to overzealous enforcement of “animal welfare” regulations against otherwise law-abiding pet owners.
Don’t forget to share this message with your family, friends, and fellow sportsmen and urge them to sign-up for updates and join the Sportsmen’s Alliance for regular updates and action items. As always, you can check www.sportsmensalliance.org and follow us on social media for breaking updates. Sportsmen throughout every state must stay actively involved to defend our hunting, fishing, and trapping heritage for present and future generations to enjoy.
