Recently, gun-control advocates have pushed for sportsmen and gun owners to carry firearms insurance. They claim that requiring insurance will “promote” responsible firearm ownership, along with being able to use the insurance money to offset the cost of violent crime caused by criminals. This tactic, however, is nothing more than an attempt to punish us, the law-abiding, by making us pay for the criminal acts of others.
As sportsmen know all too well, the gun control-led California legislature does not pass up a chance to make firearm ownership harder for sportsmen. Tomorrow, April 26, at 1:30 p.m. in room 2100, the Senate Insurance Committee is scheduled to hear Senate Bill 8, a bill to require a firearm owner to have firearm liability insurance.
SB 8 requires a person who owns a firearm to obtain and continuously maintain in full force and effect a homeowner’s, renter’s or gun liability insurance policy specifically covering losses or damages resulting from any negligent or accidental use of that firearm, including, but not limited to death, injury or property damage, and requires a person to keep written evidence of coverage in the same place the firearm is stored.
The city of San Jose passed an ordinance in January 2022 requiring its residents to purchase gun insurance but has postponed implementation because the city was immediately sued for the new ordinance. But this reality is not slowing down the legislature in the least. Simply put, they want to crater our firearms freedom in every way possible and without haste.
Please use our Take Action button below to email the committee urging them to OPPOSE SB 8. Criminals will not be purchasing firearm insurance, and law-abiding sportsmen and gun owners should not be held accountable for the criminal misuse of a firearm by others.
Don’t forget to share this alert with your family, friends, and fellow sportsmen asking them to also email the committee urging them to OPPOSE SB 8.
