Cook County, Illinois Board of Commissioner’s President Toni Preckwinkle has dropped the five-cent per bullet “violence tax” that was recently proposed in the county budget. The tax would have increased a box of shotgun shells by $12.50 and a brick of .22 cartridges by a staggering $25.
However, President Preckwinkle has refused to drop the gun tax that was also part of the proposal, saying “It is very important to us to tax guns because we know that guns are the sources of the incredible violence we have in our neighborhoods.”
The gun tax would tack on an additional $25 tax on every firearm sold within the county.
“It’s good news that the Commissioner has dropped the outrageous idea of taxing every bullet sold in the county,” said Rob Sexton, U.S. Sportsmen’s Alliance Senior Vice President. “At the same time, the gun tax is utterly ridiculous. It completely misses the mark – those who are breaking the law and committing crimes aren’t going to pay $25 when purchasing firearms illegally. Instead, this is nothing more than a blatant attempt to foist additional taxes upon law abiding gun owners to help balance their budget.”
Sportsmen should contact the Cook County Board of Commissioners and ask them to protect the rights of law-abiding gun owners by voting against the gun tax proposal.
