Yesterday, June 7, the Connecticut 2023 legislation session adjourned sine die. This means the legislative session is completed.
This year, the legislative session started out with several sportsmen-related bills being introduced. Of the bills, the Sportsmen’s Alliance reported only one was signed into law by Governor Ned Lamont, but not before it was amended, removing our opposition to it.
Senate Bill 1069, as we previously reported was ill-defined and blurred the lines between commercial breeders and hobbyists, such as sporting dog breeders, who raise dogs for hunting, field trials, and other performance events. Prior to being sent to the Governor, SB 1069 was amended clarifying the difference between commercial breeders and hobby breeders.
Sportsmen and gun owners do need to be aware that in the last two weeks of the legislative session, House Bill 6667, a gun control bill requested by Governor Lamont, was fast-tracked through the legislative process and signed into law.
HB 6667 contains several firearm restrictions, including further expanding firearms on Connecticut’s list of “assault weapons,” limiting the number of handguns a person can purchase in a month, banning open carry of any firearm, mandatory storage provisions, and more restrictions on federally licensed firearm dealers.
Even though the 2023 legislative session is over, the Sportsmen’s Alliance will continue to monitor activities in the Constitution State as you never know when issues that sportsmen need to be aware of may arise.

Please share this message with your family and friends as sportsmen throughout Connecticut must continue to stay actively involved to defend our hunting, fishing, and trapping heritage for present and future generations to enjoy.
