Guest post from “Faces of Hunters” bloggers Morgan and Mason Baseley.
We started going duck hunting with our dad when we were old enough to walk. It was always dark, cold, and on a good day, raining. That didn’t matter to us because we were out with our dad. Sweat pants under our jeans, three layers of sweatshirts and gloves that were four sizes to big.
Again, none of that was important to us because we were learning the ropes of hunting. How to call in the birds, when to send the dog and where to point the gun. That’s where our passion for hunting began.
As the seasons changed so did the hunting. We joined our dad on many adventures scouting for deer, calling in turkeys, working the duck blinds and retrieving doves. We became addicted! When we turned nine we were able to obtain our hunting licenses – this gave us the chance to give him some healthy competition!
“I will give you until the count of three”, our dad would say to keep things fair. “1…2…BANG”, is usually how it played out, making us become quick on the trigger. If you ask him now, he will tell you we have to give him to the count of three.
We have been hunting for five years now and are making our own contribution of meat to the freezer. Dove, duck, pheasant, turkey, quail, deer and pig are some of the species we’ve hunted. As we grow into hunting more we look forward to joining our dad on his many hunts which may include elk, bear, moose, a variation of deer and antelope. We have learned to be excited and open about new possibilities and adventures along with spending good quality time outdoors with our dad.
Our passion for hunting has opened up many doors, new possibilities and created anticipation for exciting adventures. We are still learning the ropes and soaking in all that our dad is teaching us.
We look forward to the time spent watching the sunrise, listening to the birds fly over, smelling the fresh air and if all goes right, seeing the proud look on our dad’s face on our next hunt.
The best teacher, guide and hunting partner a girl could ever have.
Thank you, Daddy!
