Yesterday, March 6, the Senate Commerce & Tourism Committee voted 7 to 2 to pass SB 214.
This important legislation will now go to the Rules Committee for its final committee consideration. A hearing date has not been set but the Sportsmen’s Alliance will email you when action is needed.
As previously reported, SB 214 prohibits payment settlement entities, merchant acquiring entities, and third party settlement organizations from assigning merchant category codes or otherwise classifying merchants of firearms or ammunition separately from general merchandise or sporting goods retailers.
The usage of this new merchant code is voluntary and Discover Financial Service was the first to announce it will implement the new merchant code in April.
