The Idaho legislature is pushing hard these last few days as they are hoping to adjourn soon.
House Bill 295 has already passed the House by a strong vote of 66 to 4 and has been referred to the Senate State Affairs Committee. We are expecting it to be scheduled for a hearing date soon and we will inform you as soon as it is made available. In the meantime, please use our take action button to email the committee urging them to protect sportsmen’s privacy by SUPPORTING HB 295.
House Bill 295 prohibits credit card companies from assigning unique credit card codes to firearms retailers that sell weapons and ammunition in Idaho.
In September of 2022, the International Organizations for Standardization (ISO) approved the creation of a new merchant category code (MCC) for firearm retailers to use when their customers use a credit card to purchase firearms and ammunition. The use of this new merchant category code is voluntary.
Credit card companies have decided to delay the implementation of the new MCC because of the various credit card privacy bills being introduced across the nation. But sportsmen must continue the push to pass bills like HB 295 to ensure credit card companies never implement the new merchant category code.
