Earlier this month, the 2026 Iowa legislative session officially adjourned, sine die.
In legislative terms, sine die means the assembly has finished its business for the year without setting a specific return date. For our community, it means the legislative clock has stopped, and the fate of this year’s bills is officially sealed.
New Hunting Laws Passed in 2026
It was a quiet year for sportsmen in the Hawkeye State. The Sportsmen’s Alliance monitored several bills of interest to our community. Only two bills completed the legislative process and were signed into law by Governor Kim Reynolds:
- HF 2215 (Natural Resources Omnibus): This package includes updates to the state’s park systems, preserve management, and expands hunting access by setting clear guidelines and age requirements for hunting deer with pistols or revolvers.
- SF 2318 (Nonresident Deer Hunting): This legislation removes the mandatory requirement for nonresidents to purchase an antlerless-only license alongside an any-sex license in DNR-exempt zones.

The Fight to Protect Iowa Sporting Traditions Continues
Defending our outdoor heritage does not stop just because the legislative session has wrapped up. Animal extremists and anti-hunting and gun groups never clock out. They are always looking for new ways to threaten and dismantle our traditions and way of life.
This is why we need you to stay engaged, keep your boots on the ground, and be ready to mobilize at a moment’s notice. Please share this message with fellow sportsmen and urge them to join you and the Sportsmen’s Alliance in protecting and defending our way of life in the Hawkeye State.
The Sportsmen’s Alliance guarantees hunting, fishing, and trapping for the American sportsman now and forever. We’re there when sportsmen need us most. We are the only organization specifically created to protect the individual hunter, angler, and trapper – no matter the threat. We will never compromise when it comes to defending our way of life in the courts, in the legislatures, in the public square, and at the ballot box. We make this promise to the American sportsman: we will never give up and never give in while proudly securing our future against those seeking to destroy our values, beliefs, and traditions.
