On Monday, June 3, Louisiana’s 2024 Regular Legislative Session adjourned sine die. This means the legislative session is completed for the year.
This year, several sportsmen-related bills were introduced, passed the legislature, and sent to Governor Jeff Landry for consideration. The following bills are waiting for Governor Landry’s consideration:
House Bill 684 authorizes black bear hunting, establishes license requirements, authorizes the Wildlife and Fisheries Commission to establish a lottery, authorizes the secretary of the Department of Wildlife and Fisheries to auction for black bear harvest permits, and allows dedicated black bear funds to be used for management, conservation, restoration, and enhancement of the black bear.
Senate Bill 234 prohibits governmental entity contracts with companies that discriminate against the firearm and ammunition industries.
Senate Bill 301 prohibits a financial entity from using a firearms merchant category code to distinguish a firearms retailer from other retailers.
The following bills have already been signed into law and take effect on August 1, 2024.
House Bill 409 prohibits the harassment and disturbance of trappers, hunters, and fishermen on all lands and waters managed by the state, rather than restricting the prohibition to state-managed wildlife refuges, wildlife sanctuaries, wildlife management areas, public hunting grounds, and upland game preserves.
House Bill 802 authorizes the use of dogs to retrieve and then dispatch mortally wounded deer.
Senate Bill 194 strengthens the state’s firearm preemption law.
Senate Bill 211 allows the Wildlife and Fisheries Commission to set the size limit for fillets of spotted sea trout and red drum.
Even though the 2024 legislative session is over, the Government Affairs team will continue to monitor activities in the Pelican State. You never know when sportsmen need to be aware of issues that may arise.
