Tomorrow, March 29, at 10 a.m., in room 208, the Education & Cultural Affairs Committee will hold a public hearing on a bill to enhance wildlife conservation efforts and preserve Maine’s outdoor heritage by requiring elements of the hunter safety course as part of the public school curriculum.
LD 1084 adds a requirement that the elements of a Maine firearm hunter safety course must be taught no later than grade 9 in all public and private schools in Maine. Successful completion of the course will result in the issuance to the student of a Maine hunter safety certificate that satisfies the requirement to obtain an adult hunting license in Maine.
Hunter education is not just about hunting. It incorporates ethics, decision making, responsibility and an appreciation of the outdoors. With the continual digital growth and urbanization of society, allowing elements of the hunter-education program in schools gives our children an opportunity to learn something they may or may not be exposed to in their daily life.
