Last Saturday, August 31, the California legislature adjourned. This means the session has concluded for the year.
It was a quiet session for the Golden State. One bill of concern to sportsmen was sent to Governor Gavin Newsom for consideration, Senate Bill 53, mandatory firearm storage legislation.
As previously reported, the Sportsmen’s Alliance believes in the safe storage of firearms. Except
SB 53 goes too far. This egregious legislation mandates exactly how this storage must occur in OUR homes and only with Department of Justice (DOJ) approved equipment.
SB 53 mandates a person shall not keep or store a firearm in any residence owned or controlled by that person unless the firearm meets both of the following conditions:
a) Stored in a locked box or safe that is listed on the DOJ’s list of approved safety devices and
b) Properly engaged so as to render that firearm inaccessible by any person other than the owner or other lawfully authorized user.
