Tomorrow, March 5, several bills are moving in Nashville, Tenn., that require sportsmen’s attention. These bills are listed in order of when the committee will be meeting. Please make sure you use all the Take Action buttons to ensure your message is sent to the respective committee.
At noon tomorrow, in House hearing room II, the House Criminal Justice Subcommittee is scheduled to hear House Bill 1587, House Bill 1935 and House Bill 2277.
These three bills are just “feel-good” legislation that gun-control advocates are pushing to say they are doing something, instead of working on the real problem of stopping criminals. In fact, the only thing these bills do is eviscerate hunting on several different levels from rifles and shotguns being manufactured, ownership for common hunting rifles, and keeping our hunting traditions alive by prohibiting our next generation from purchasing their own firearm.
Please use the Take Action button to email committee members and urge them to vote NO on HB 1587, HB 1935, and HB 2277.
Tennessee is home to several firearm manufacturers, most recently to Smith & Wesson. If HB 1587 were passed, businesses like Smith & Wesson, Beretta USA and 20 other firearm manufactures would be out of business. This legislation prohibits the manufacture of semi-automatic firearms in the state.
HB 1935 prohibits the sale of semi-automatic firearms with certain “features.” This is similar to prohibitions currently used in states like California, New York and New Jersey.
HB 2277 prohibits those under 21 from purchasing a rifle or shotgun. This legislation is poised to destroy the firearm freedoms of law-abiding young Americans who shoot, hunt or defend themselves with a firearm. Eighteen-to-20-year-olds can defend their country, but not themselves?
Last week, the House Banking & Consumer Affairs Subcommittee ran out of time and did not get a chance to hear House Bill 2762, the “Second Amendment Financial Privacy Act.” This important legislation has been rescheduled to be heard tomorrow, March 5, at 1:30 p.m., in House hearing room II. HB 2762 prohibits a financial institution or its agents from using a firearms merchant category code (MCC) by a firearms retailer physically located in this state in a manner that distinguishes a firearms retailer from a general merchandise retailer or a sporting goods retailer.
If you have not already done so, please use the Take Action button to email the subcommittee members and urge them to vote YES to HB 2762!
The last hearing of concern for sportsmen is at 3 p.m., in Senate hearing room I, the Senate Judiciary Committee is scheduled to hear SB 1927.
Tennessee’s firearm preemption law protects sportsmen and gun owners by prohibiting counties, cities, towns, municipalities, or metropolitan governments, any local agency, department, or official from passing their own laws or ordinances restricting the lawful use, purchase, transfer, taxation, manufacture, ownership, possession, carrying, sale, acquisition, gift, devise, licensing, registration, storage, transportation of firearms, ammunition or components of firearms and ammunition.
SB 1927 weakens the Volunteer State’s firearm preemption law by repealing storage from the statute. This will allow local governments to enact their own laws, regulations, and ordinances on how and where sportsmen must store their firearms, ammunition, AND firearm accessories.
Please use the Take Action button to email the committee members and urge them to vote NO on SB 1927.
Don’t forget to share this important alert with your family, friends and fellow sportsmen. Ask them to use all the Take Action button to ensure the voice of sportsmen are heard on each of the bills scheduled for a committee hearing tomorrow.
