On Saturday, March 22, the New Mexico 2025 legislative session adjourned sine die. This means the regular legislative session is completed for the year.
Thanks to your involvement, two sportsmen-related bills of serious concern were defeated when they did not complete the legislative process before sine die.
Senate Bill 279 would have prohibited the importation, sale, manufacture, transfer, receipt or possession of a gas-operated semiautomatic firearm and gives the Attorney General, with the consultation of the Department of Public Safety, the discretion to identify what gas-operated semiautomatic firearms will be placed on the list of prohibited firearms.
Senate Bill 318 would have created a special cause of action for the Attorney General and even private persons “likely” to be damaged and to hold firearms manufacturers, distributors, and online marketplaces jointly liable for the violent acts of third parties, with severe penalties of $250,000 per violation.
Governor Lujan Grisham did sign Senate Bill 5 into law on March 20. SB 5 renames the Department of Game and Fish as the Department of Wildlife, reforms the state game commission appointment process, creates a wildlife commission nominating committee, expands the management of wildlife, and provides for fee adjustments for inflation.
Even though the 2025 legislative session is over, sportsmen can stay actively involved in helping to protect and manage New Mexico’s fish and wildlife resources by attending the Department of Wildlife Commission meetings. Keep an eye on your inbox for details on the next wildlife commission meeting.

We make this promise to the American sportsman: we will never give up and never give in while proudly securing our future against those seeking to destroy our values, beliefs, and traditions.
