New Mexico is pushing forward with more gun control legislation that are of serious concern to sportsmen and gun owners. On Tuesday, Feb. 7, the House Consumer & Public Affairs Committee will hold public hearings on extreme gun control bills at 1:30 p.m. at the State Capitol in room 317.
House Bill 100 adds a mandatory 14-day waiting period on all firearm purchases. Waiting periods have not been shown to promote public safety. Instead, these arbitrary waiting periods limit the actions of law-abiding citizens, including those who want a firearm for self-defense or for hunting.
House Bill 101 redefines several commonly owned semi-automatic rifles, pistols and shotguns as “assault weapons” and bans the possession, manufacture, purchase, sale and transfer of these “assault weapons,” along with standard capacity magazines capable of holding more than 10 rounds of ammunition. There is no grandfather clause and current owners would be required to move the redefined “assault weapons” out of the state, sell them to a federal firearm licensed dealer or surrender them to a law enforcement agency prior to July 1, 2023, or face FELONY charges.
