On December 14, the Assembly amended Senate Bill 185, prohibiting state and local governments from restricting the possession, purchase, or carry of firearms during a declared emergency, into Senate Bill 16 and passed it by a vote of 57 to 19. The Senate immediately concurred on the amended bill 29 to 0. This important bill prevents governments from restricting hunting, fishing, and related businesses under the guise of an emergency, thereby protecting bird-hunting preserves, fishing charters, and hunting guides from forced closure when a state of emergency has been issued. SB 16 will now be sent to Governor Mike DeWine for his consideration.

As previously reported, the Covid epidemic exposed an alarming tendency of the government to restrict constitutionally protected freedoms under the guise of an emergency. The Sportsmen’s Alliance thanks bill sponsor Senator Tim Schaffer, Representative Scott Wiggam, and all the House and Senate members who worked hard to send this important firearm protection to the Governor’s desk.
Don’t forget to share this email with your family, friends, and fellow sportsmen and women asking them to email Governor DeWine urging him to sign SB 16 into law also.
