While most of us read—and cheered–that female shotgunner Kim Rhode won another gold at the Olympics, the sad fact is that the mass media has failed to report on shooting competitions at the summer Olympics in London. The list of men’s events includes:
- Air pistols and rifles
- Double trap
- Trap
- Skeet
- Pistol
- Rapid fire pistol
- Rifle prone
- Rifle three-position
Women also have most of these events to compete in, and some of these Olympic shooting competitions have been held for more than 20 years. Unfortunately, long removed is the competition of shooting at running (moving) deer targets.
And there are also archery competitions at the summer Olympic games. These include men’s and women’s individual and team events. The targets are 70 meters—a long distance—away. The reported minimum age for an Olympic archer is 16 years old. All competitors must use recurve bows.
To date (9AUG2012) the United States athletes have won one silver medal in archery, three gold medals in shooting, and one bronze medal in shooting events. Congratulations to our athletes and teams.
