The Humane Society of the U.S. is well known for using photos of sickly looking dogs to attract attention and push for donations. Now, a new twist on this tired effort could be PETA’s “Adopt a Doghouse” campaign. After you see the dog’s big begging eyes in the PETA website image, another click on the group’s website request icon takes you directly to a donation page where you can “sponsor a dog house for $265.” Donors can make monthly payments on doghouses. Read the full details here.
The real news is that a search of their website could not reveal how you—or anyone—can request a free PETA doghouse. There’s also no detail of PETA actually giving any doghouses to anyone. And more revealing is that the dogs pictured on the site are not actually in any PETA doghouses—most of those dogs appeared to be chained in backyards. Do these dog houses exist, one could wonder. That would follow the questions raised by many in recent months about whether HSUS supports any animal shelters as the group uses dogs and cat photos to push donation requests on its website.
This is one PETA dog-driven campaign that should be questioned and avoided by all.
