On Friday, August 15, the Thurston County Superior Court will hear oral arguments regarding the Sportsmen’s Alliance Foundation’s (SAF) motion for summary judgment in its public records case against the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW) and the Public Records Act Merit hearing. Oral arguments will be viewable via Zoom at 1:30 p.m. PDT with Judge John Skinder.
As previously reported, SAF requested a summary judgment in the case, citing clear evidence of violations of the state’s Public Records Act (PRA) by agency staff and individual commissioners alike. The motion asks the judge to rule on the case because the evidence brought forth to this point shows obvious and blatant disregard of the PRA, and further proceedings on the merits of the case are unnecessary.
In January 2025, SAF brought suit against WDFW after waiting more than a year for the production of documents related to several policies, including the November 2022 decision to cancel the spring bear hunting season permanently.
As a result of the lawsuit, SAF received more than 40,000 records, uncovering a panoply of bad behaviors, established norms, and in several instances, evidence of potential crimes taking place, including felonies.
