Last week, the House amended S. 3064, an environmental bond bill, to include language repealing the ban on Sunday hunting and enacting archery reform, and sent it back to the Senate. The Senate did not agree with the House amendments, and the bill is now in conference committee to work out the details.

After Democratic leadership tried to kill sportsmen’s momentum by stripping Governor Healey’s pro-hunting language from the supplemental budget, we fought back, and we won the first round.
Thanks to your collective pressure, House lawmakers successfully revived the provisions to repeal the Sunday hunting ban, legalize crossbows, and safely reduce archery setback distances to 250 feet. These critical updates have been officially inserted into the Environmental Bond Bill (S. 3064). This puts us closer than we have been in decades to ending Massachusetts’ status as one of the last two states in the nation with an absolute Sunday hunting ban.
Why We Must Stay Vigilant
While we celebrate this major step forward, the battle is far from over. The anti-hunting organizations, like the Massachusetts Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (MSPCA), have been sending out misinformation to pressure the Senate to strip these provisions out. We cannot let their loud, well-funded minority drown out the voices of law-abiding sportsmen and the sound science of MassWildlife’s biologists.
As sportsmen, we are the true frontline guardians of a lifestyle that is increasingly coming under political fire. While we are actively funding conservation and managing the land, anti-sportsmen groups are busy holding public hearings to erase our way of life. The threats we face today are unprecedented. It is time for our community to stand together, match their energy, and fiercely protect our right to hunt, fish, and trap. This is how we ensure the legacy we inherited is preserved for our kids, grandkids, and generations to come.
