Last year, Virginia’s gun-control House and Senate sent several bills of serious concern to sportsmen and gun owners to the governor. Despite Governor Youngkin vetoing those bills, they sent them back to him again this year.
Yesterday, Monday, March 24, Governor Youngkin stood up again for the rights of sportsmen and gun owners and vetoed those anti-sportsmen bills.
- SB848 would have prohibited a person under the age of 21 from purchasing certain semiautomatic rifles, pistols, and shotguns.
- SB880 would have prohibited the carrying of certain semiautomatic centerfire rifles or shotguns on any public street, road, alley, sidewalk, public right-of-way, or in any public park or any other place of whatever nature that is open to the public.
- SB891 / HB1607 would have imposed an arbitrary five-day delay before a law-abiding citizen may take possession of a legally purchased firearm.
- SB1134 would have required a firearm(s) and ammunition to be stored in a locked container, compartment, or cabinet.
- SB1181 would have banned law-abiding adults and people under the age of 21 from owning certain semiautomatic rifles, shotguns, and pistols and places limits on magazine capacity.
- SB1450 / HB1608 would have instituted new vague laws and restrictions on the already heavily regulated firearms industry. It also would have authorized the Attorney General or a district attorney to sue a member of the firearm industry by alleging violations and even potential violations of these laws to the extreme of allowing persons “likely to be harmed” to request equitable relief from a court.
The Sportsmen’s Alliance thanks Governor Youngkin for his continued support of the Old Dominion State’s sportsmen and gun owners. We also thank our members and supporters for answering the call to action and staying actively involved.
Even though the 2025 legislative session is over, sportsmen can stay actively involved in helping to protect and manage Virginia’s fish and wildlife resources by attending the Department of Wildlife Resources (DWR) Commission meetings. Keep an eye on your inbox for details on the next DWR Commission meeting.
