In recent years science-denying activist organizations have targeted game commissions in their attempt to destroy hunting. Paramount to their plan is the theory of “rewilding,” which removes hunters from the landscape and allows predators to “control” populations of ungulates and other prey species. It’s a “hands off,” preservationist view of wildlife management that overlooks man’s undeniable impact upon the ecosystems of North America. It’s a child-like fantasy that ignores science and history in favor of ideology and unproven promises with an inconsistent and unsustainable funding model.
By petitioning game commissions, these radicals only need to sway around a dozen commissioners rather than entire legislative bodies. Worse still, they are actively attempting to infiltrate these governing bodies – as we’ve seen in Washington and Colorado – to severely restrict management across the board or end entire hunting seasons. Even states with stringent requirements to serve aren’t immune to this new lobbying effort – activists are simply attempting to pass legislation eliminating the requirements or by creating a new supervisory board that oversees their decisions. As seasons for bears, coyotes, mountain lions, bobcats and wolves are regulated out of existence, ungulate herds and other prey species bear the brunt of increased predation, the likes of which necessitate a reduction in tags, permits and harvest for hunters – and the funding they bring to the wildlife-management table.
